The stock market is full of confusing words. Here's what they actually mean in plain English.
P/E Ratio (Price-to-Earnings Ratio)→Is the price too high?
Like checking if a car is overpriced compared to what it earns you
Revenue Growth→Is the company growing?
Is the business making more money each year than the year before?
Dividend Yield→Does this stock pay you?
Like rent from a property - cash you get just for owning it
Competitive Moat→Strength - how hard it is for competitors to beat this company
Like a castle with a moat - the wider it is, the harder to attack
RSI (Relative Strength Index)→Energy Level
Like checking if a runner is tired - overbought (>70) means exhausted, oversold (<30) means rested
Support / Resistance→Floor Price / Ceiling Price
Support = trampoline (price bounces up). Resistance = ceiling (price hits head and drops)
DCF (Discounted Cash Flow) Valuation→Is It Worth the Price?
Like buying a rental property - add up all future earnings to decide if today's price is fair
DRIP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan)→Auto-reinvest your dividends
A snowball rolling downhill - your dividends automatically buy more shares, which earn more dividends
Market Cap→Total value of the company
Stock price x number of shares = how much the whole company is 'worth'
Bull Market / Bear Market→Prices going UP / Prices going DOWN
Bull = charges up. Bear = swipes down. We're in a bear phase right now.
ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund)→A basket of stocks you buy as one
Like a variety pack - instead of picking one stock, you get a little of many
VIX (Volatility Index) / Volatility→Fear Level - how wild prices are swinging
Like a roller coaster - high VIX = scary drops and spikes
MA (Moving Average) - 50 / 200 day→Average price over time
Smooths out the noise - if price is ABOVE the average, the trend is UP
Volume→How many people are buying and selling
Like foot traffic in a store - high volume = lots of action, low volume = quiet
Earnings Report→Company report card - comes out every 3 months
Like a student's grades - did the company beat expectations or fail?
Short Selling→Betting a stock will go DOWN
Like borrowing a friend's bike, selling it for $100, buying it back at $70, and keeping the $30
