Understanding Prop Firm Drawdown Types
The Critical Detail Most Traders Miss
At PropFirmTrend.com, we help futures traders compare prop firms intelligently. The most misunderstood factor? How your firm calculates drawdown.
Most traders only look at the drawdown limit (whether it's a percentage or fixed dollar amount), but HOW it's calculated can make or break your trading career.
The 3 Drawdown Types Explained
1. Static Drawdown (Fixed)
Your maximum loss is calculated from your starting balance and never changes.
Example: $50K account with $2,000 static drawdown
- •Max loss: $2,000 (threshold at $48,000)
- •Grow to $55,000? Threshold stays at $48,000
- •Most forgiving for profitable traders
2. End of Day (EOD) Trailing Drawdown
Your loss threshold trails upward daily based on your closing balance.
Example: $50K account with $2,000 EOD trailing
- •Day 1: Close at $50,000 → threshold at $48,000
- •Day 2: Close at $52,000 → threshold moves to $50,000
- •Day 3: Close at $51,000 → threshold stays at $50,000 (only trails up)
Pros:
- • Locks in profits daily
- • Protects from intraday swings
Cons:
- • Threshold rises even on small gains
3. Intraday Trailing Drawdown (Real-Time)
Your loss threshold trails in real-time as your account hits new highs, including unrealized profits from open positions.
Example: $50K account with $2,000 intraday trailing
- •Open ES long, account shows $52,000 (with unrealized gain) → threshold immediately moves to $50,000
- •Price reverses, you're still in the trade at $49,900 → VIOLATION (even though you haven't closed)
⚠️ MOST RESTRICTIVE
Your drawdown threshold locks in based on open position profits, making it extremely difficult to hold through normal market fluctuations.
📌 IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Intraday Trailing Drawdown locks and becomes static on most prop firms on a SIM FUNDED ACCOUNT ONLY when profits exceed the Trailing Max Drawdown limit by $100.
For example, in a $50,000 Sim Funded account with a $2,000 drawdown, once your profits reach $2,100, the drawdown locks at $50,100. Always check your specific prop firm's rules as this varies between firms and between evaluation vs. funded accounts.
Position Sizing: Don't Make This Mistake
The Problem
New traders with $50K-$100K accounts immediately trade full ES/NQ contracts.
- •1 ES contract = $50 per point
- •A 20-point move = $1,000 (2% of $50K account in ONE trade)
- •With $2,000 drawdown = only 2 bad trades before violation
The Solution
Start with MICRO contracts (MES, MNQ)
- •1 MES = $5 per point (1/10th the size)
- •1 MNQ = $2 per point (1/10th the size)
Smart Strategy:
- 1.Prove consistency with Micros first
- 2.Graduate to Minis gradually once profitable
- 3.Never risk more than 1-2% per trade

💡 Bottom Line
The difference between static, EOD trailing, and intraday trailing drawdown can determine whether you become a consistently funded trader or lose your evaluation in the first week.
Understanding these rules + proper position sizing = long-term success
